Annie Dillard is one of the only contemporary writers — one of the only writers whose career has more or less overlapped Marilynne Robinson’s — whom Robinson is known to admire. (She also apparently went rafting once with both Dillard and Robert Stone, a detail that makes a person want to take up rafting.)
