Drive-Away Dolls (movie; 2024; dir. by Ethan Coen and, to judge by reports, Tricia Cooke)
I know we’re all sick of arguing about representation. But — I’m sorry — this film sets representation back at least twenty years. It goes for cheap and obvious jokes rather than nuanced exploration, easy stereotype rather than uncomfortable truth. It shows a much-maligned community in a way that may not be malicious, but certainly won’t disrupt anyone’s expectations. It caters to the gaze of convention.
