In grad school I read Tristram Shandy and loved it. What I admire most about that book is the way it keeps throwing sand in the gears of its own narration. Where any other novel says "The marquise went out at five o'clock,"  Tristram says, in effect:

"The* marquise** went*** out**** at***** five****** o'clock*******

*isn't 'the' a bizarre word, so imperia…
