On the Kids, and Whether Or Not They’re All Right
I think I can say this this vaguely and not violate any confidentiality restrictions: My students’ first papers this year are all more or less in the “literacy narrative” tradition, at least in being focused on formative experiences they’ve had that involve or are about reading, writing, or language. One of my students decided to write an essay about how she became, briefly, a somewhat prominent voice on romance BookTok. As a high schooler. She says it also devastated her ability to read, and so she grew out of it.
It’s actually quite a good, funny paper; I’m trying to figure out somewhere she could publish it. Also, this is an anecdote that confirms so many of my prejudices that I would disbelieve it if it happened to someone else.
