Some New Years' Resolutions
I get the general impression that people are down on New Year’s resolutions. If you want to make a real change, pick something measurable and achievable, and then make a plan. Tie it to an already-established habit. Forget about the calendar. This is all good advice, but it aggregates to Live always as though your therapist were in the room. Never make big, sudden changes. Don’t attach irrational significance to dates and to turns of the calendar. Live without magical thinking and mild, everyday bits of glamor. And that, in turn, is itself absolutely not a measurable or achievable goal, or a plan, nor yet something I can tie to an already-established habit.
So yes, I always make New Years’ resolutions, and some of them even pan out, and others are helpful in the aim-for-the-moon-and-you-might-at-least-reach-Paris sense.
